Vertebral Fracture

Vertebral fractures are breaks or cracks in the bones of the spine. These fractures can lead to intense pain, decreased mobility, and other complications if not treated properly. Often resulting from trauma, osteoporosis, or pathological conditions, vertebral fractures need prompt attention and care.

Causes

  • Trauma: Accidents, falls, or sports injuries.
  • Osteoporosis: A disease that weakens bones, making them more susceptible to fractures.
  • Pathological Fractures: Conditions such as tumors or infections weakening the bone.
  • Excessive Force or Pressure: Lifting heavy objects improperly or repetitive forceful activities.

Common Issues

  • Acute and chronic back pain
  • Reduced spinal mobility
  • Spinal deformities or height loss
  • Nerve compression symptoms like numbness or tingling
  • Increased risk of subsequent vertebral fractures

Treatment Options

Managing a vertebral fracture is multifaceted, and the best approach depends on the cause, severity, and the patient’s overall health.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

  • Pain Medication: Over-the-counter or prescription medications to manage pain.
  • Bracing: To immobilize and support the spine during the healing process.
  • Physical Therapy: Targeted exercises to strengthen back muscles and improve posture.
  • Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty: Minimally invasive procedures where medical-grade cement is injected into the fractured vertebra to stabilize it.

Surgical Treatment Options

  • Spinal Fusion: Joining two or more vertebrae together to provide stability.
  • Balloon Kyphoplasty: Using a balloon to create space in the fractured vertebra, then filling it with bone cement.
  • Spinal Decompression: Removing bone or tissue to relieve pressure on spinal nerves.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

The recovery timeline varies based on the treatment chosen:

  • Bracing and Physical Therapy: Often, patients are encouraged to walk as soon as they feel able, gradually increasing activity.
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures: Quick recovery, with many patients resuming normal activity within a few days.
  • Surgery: Can require a longer recovery, often several weeks or months. Physical therapy is crucial during this period to regain strength and mobility.

Throughout recovery, it’s essential to follow medical advice, attend follow-up appointments, and engage in rehabilitation exercises to ensure the best outcome.

Dr. Iqbal is the best pain management doctor I have ever had and will have. She does her homework first which I think makes the difference in diagnosis. She is the total package, a very smart and beautiful doctor, wife, and mother. Hand on Bible she changed my life, and I will forever be in debt to her. I can't say thank you enough. I appreciate her staff; they are all awesome as well. I laughed and cried in her office, but her smile and staff always made me feel welcome like part of their family. I would and will drive across country to see her. The referral to a new knee surgeon to fix a bad knee replacement was the best. I got a new knee, and it has been a huge blessing as well. Thank you, Dr. Iqbal and staff you all are 5 stars, in my life.

I visited this facility in January for severe back pain I was experiencing. The whole ordeal from beginning to end was amazing. I wish I had known about this place years ago before suffering from so much pain. Dr. Mehreen Iqbal, her assistant Michealle Dooley and their staff is the best. I had a procedure done on 1/17/24 and I no longer suffer from back pain and I'm able to walk again. I highly recommend this facility, 10 Stars!!!
