Sacroiliac Joint Pain

Sacroiliac joint pain, often abbreviated as SI joint pain, arises from the sacroiliac joints located where the spine meets the pelvis. These joints play a pivotal role in absorbing shock between the upper body and the pelvis and legs. Dysfunction or inflammation here can lead to discomfort and decreased mobility.

Causes

  • Trauma: Accidents, falls, or sudden twists can injure the SI joint.
  • Degenerative Arthritis: Osteoarthritis in the SI joint due to aging.
  • Pregnancy: Hormonal changes and weight gain can stress the SI joint.
  • Inflammatory Conditions: Such as ankylosing spondylitis or psoriatic arthritis.
  • Infection: Rare but can occur in the SI joint.
  • Prior Lumbar Spine Surgery: Changes in motion dynamics post-surgery can stress the SI joint.

Common Issues

  • Lower back pain, often felt on one side.
  • Pain that radiates down the leg.
  • Stiffness or burning sensation in the pelvis.
  • Increased pain when standing up from a seated position.
  • Discomfort while climbing stairs or with prolonged sitting.

Treatment Options

Tailoring the right treatment for sacroiliac joint pain depends on the root cause and severity of the symptoms.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

  • Physical Therapy: Exercises to strengthen the muscles around the SI joint.
  • SI Joint Injections: Corticosteroids injected into the joint to reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter or prescription medications to manage pain.
  • Chiropractic Adjustments: Manipulative therapies to restore joint function.

Surgical Treatment Options

  • SI Joint Fusion: A procedure to fuse the joint, eliminating movement and thus, the pain.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation: Using heat to disrupt nerve function in the painful area.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Recovery durations can vary significantly based on the treatment:

  • Physical Therapy: Ongoing therapy sessions might be necessary to manage symptoms.
  • Injections: Immediate relief, although it might be temporary and repeat injections might be needed.
  • Surgery: Requires a longer recovery phase, possibly several weeks or more, combined with physical therapy to optimize outcomes.

Regular follow-ups and consistent rehabilitation exercises are critical during recovery to ensure the best results and prevent future complications.

Dr. Iqbal is the best pain management doctor I have ever had and will have. She does her homework first which I think makes the difference in diagnosis. She is the total package, a very smart and beautiful doctor, wife, and mother. Hand on Bible she changed my life, and I will forever be in debt to her. I can't say thank you enough. I appreciate her staff; they are all awesome as well. I laughed and cried in her office, but her smile and staff always made me feel welcome like part of their family. I would and will drive across country to see her. The referral to a new knee surgeon to fix a bad knee replacement was the best. I got a new knee, and it has been a huge blessing as well. Thank you, Dr. Iqbal and staff you all are 5 stars, in my life.

I visited this facility in January for severe back pain I was experiencing. The whole ordeal from beginning to end was amazing. I wish I had known about this place years ago before suffering from so much pain. Dr. Mehreen Iqbal, her assistant Michealle Dooley and their staff is the best. I had a procedure done on 1/17/24 and I no longer suffer from back pain and I'm able to walk again. I highly recommend this facility, 10 Stars!!!

My PCP recommended Dr. Mehreen and she was wonderful through out the entire injection process. She took her time explaining everything and was patient through out the process. In my opinion, she is the best pain management doc around.
